Mercy Corps Gender 2017

In Colombia, gender inequality and gender-based violence have been linked to the armed conflict as a weapon of war. Through displacement, abuse, violence and rape have perpetuated the wounds of conflict in women.

These dynamics, in addition to increasing the chances of early pregnancy in girls, add new barriers to access to women's rights, income generation and self-sufficiency.

Mercy Corps implements gender equality and gender-based violence prevention programs with displaced population. Creating bridges of access to information and awareness, sexual and reproductive health services and psychosocial support.

These are after-school activities where facilitators support girls and boys to do their homework, explain study methods and work on relationship with their peers. They are very fun afternoons, where through play, sports, painting and dancing they learn different life skills and reinforce their knowledge in language and mathematics.

In the PaZatardes there is a special space for girls where we work their empowerment in different areas such as emotion management, body care, self-esteem, leadership and rights.

That's why the Children and Youth Build Your Future program worked with an after-school activities model that includes content with a gender approach, life skills, math, and language. The integration of parents and teachers in the process has been fundamental. Despite the fact that the internees have poor conditions of infrastructure, overcrowding, lack of bathrooms, public services and adequate accompaniment by the government; The achievements have been many.
